Now for an unfortunate -- and darker -- side of romance:
Does the love of your life seem just a little too good to be true? The background verification service DateSmart says it can help relieve some of your anxieties in that regard. A DateSmart spokesman says the service, once available only for the wealthy, offers the advice: If you date, investigate.
The company claims that its clientele range between 30 and 50 years of age and is generally well educated. Executives say DateSmart has been checking backgrounds of friends and lovers since 1995, providing information on marital status, criminal history and real estate holdings. DateSmart "works personally and confidentially with its clients, explaining with compassion what the information means," the spokesperson says. The firm's Web site lists "red flags" signaling behavior to watch for, including lying or blaming others.
